Analyzing The Lyrics 4 "Best I Can"

Art of Dying
"Best I Can"

Original Lyrics: (Courtesy of  Lyrics007)

Tonight I feel like the world won't miss me
So much to say but there's no one listening
If we're alone are we all together in that

I threw a penny in a well for wishing
and prayed for all the things I think I'm missing
A little time is all I really need

I am doing the best I can with everything I am
Don't you know nobody's perfect
Do you understand how hard I'm trying to do the best I can
The best I can

A second chance to give you something
It takes a lifetime to come from nothing
I refuse to believe in running away

I am doing the best I can with everything I am
Don't you know nobody's perfect
Do you understand how hard I'm trying for you
I am doing the best I can with everything I am
Don't you know I think you're worth it
Do you understand how hard I'm trying to do the best I can
The best I can

I got a picture of what matters and I keep it close to my heart
It's a little faded but so am I

Cause I am doing the best I can with everything I am
Don't you know nobody's perfect
Do you understand how hard I'm trying for you
I am doing the best I can with everything I am
Don't you know I think you're worth it
Do you understand how hard I'm trying to do the best I can
The best I can [3x]
The best I can
The best I can

And I'm doing, oh I'm doing the best I can
I am, I'm doing the best, oh the best I can
The best I can, oh the best I can
Oh I keep doing, keep trying

The first thing that strikes me in this song: someone seems ungrateful
He is doing the best he can (apparently) and...well...imagine like its a phone conversation and we can only hear one side...that's how i view this song....i can't REALLY grasp what's going on, but just from his words, i can gather that the person on the other line isn't being very kind towards his effort

I want to focus on the first verse the most, because in my personal opinion, these are the best lines in the song (as in terms of meaning and just being well-written)

Tonight I feel like the world won't miss me
So much to say but there's no one listening
If we're alone are we all together in that

I threw a penny in a well for wishing
and prayed for all the things I think I'm missing
A little time is all I really need

That third line "If we're alone are we all together in that"
It's ALMOST one of those comical, sobering line like "Your unique!...just like everyone else"
It points out the most depressing fact, that they are alone, but they are together in their loneliness
A line like this is intriguing in that no one really knows how to take it....is that suppose to be uplifting? encouraging? is it suppose to be depressing? even the question, is that true?

"And prayed for all the things i think i'm missing"
See my last post Analyzing The Lyrics 3 "I Never Wanted"
My last post basically covers this whole line. The fact that we think we NEED this and NEED that....
but this line gives me hope in that he says "i think" i'm missing...meaning he is started to realize that he may not need what he thinks he needs
Also points out that society thinks that life should be like a fairytale where we wish for stuff and POOF it should there!

Right now, I have a hurt arm and the doctor said "Just give it time and it will heal"
The last line of the first verse "A little time is all i really need" may sound simple, but it's easier said than done
It makes it sound easy, like the doctors make my healing process sound easy...but patience isn't easy
hence, why no one is ever patient
so for saying that ALL he needs is a little time is more like saying "i need a lot, cause this is going to take a lot out of me"
They say time heals everything, but that's not entirely true

A second chance to give you something
It takes a lifetime to come from nothing
I refuse to believe in running away

A re-do, a recovery, and a resolve.
Re-do's aren't always given, so always take them
Recovering may take forever, but at least you did something constructive
Resolve is virtue that requires a backbone....get one.

He doesn't even see running away as an option. He doesn't believe in it, thus it doesn't exist.

I got a picture of what matters and I keep it close to my heart
It's a little faded but so am I

Life has worn this guy out, but he doesn't forget his true values; what is important comes first.
This is the time for the listener to think "what does my picture have on it?"
your family?
your best friend?
your husband/wife?
He implies that its faded and that he is too....he admits life is tough, and as he forgets to put what's important first, it fades....and when all that really matters to you fades, you do to. you start to let your purpose waste away...don't let it. There's so much more planned for you than you even know! (Jeremiah 29:11)

Most of this song is repetitive "the best i can, doing the best i can, trying the best i can, etc."
but the last line i want to point out is where he says:
"Don't you know that nobody is perfect"
amen to that.

Thanks for reading, and thanks again to Justin for the song! If you want song lyrics to be....decoded? I don't know, just send me the song title with artist!
